Prepare Your Property for Warmer Months With These Four Tips
Summer is in the air—the sun is shining and the snow has long melted. Now that the nicer weather is here to stay, it’s time to make sure your home is ready for the change of season. A basic inspection of the gutters, windows, doors, and pipes will need to be done to see what (if any) damage has been done by the colder months. With these four maintenance tips, you’ll be able to seamlessly transition your home to warmer days.
1. Clean the Gutters
Hopefully, you were able to clean your gutters before the snow hit. If you did, there shouldn’t be a lot of buildup that you’ll need to remove. Make sure they are draining properly and that there is no ice stuck in them. If there is, you can use
ice-melt pellets or de-icer to clear them out. Remove any debris that has built up at the base of the gutters and allow them to drain properly.
2. Inspect the Foundation
Your home’s foundation can develop cracks over time. Once the snow has melted, walk around your house and inspect the foundation for cracks and pooling water. If you find pooling water, clean it out and check the corresponding interior floors and walls to make sure there isn’t any residual damage.
3. Check the Roof
Even the newest of roofs can be damaged by winter storms, so once the snow and ice melt, it’s a good idea to check it out. Look for missing or cracked shingles, and inspect the vents and spouts for any clogs or damage. After inspection and repairs, scrape off any moss or growth using a shovel or pick.
4. Make Sure the Pipes Aren’t Leaking
Winters in Toronto can get cold, and cold weather can result in cracked or burst pipes. Pipes you use on a regular basis should be fine, but the ones that have been dormant over the winter months (like a hose or spigot) should be checked before using. Remove any covers and heating elements, visually inspect the pipes for cracks, and check the surrounding area for any water damage. If everything looks good, turn on the faucet and let it run for a few minutes. After you’ve shut it off, inspect the faucet or spigot.
