These Are Toronto’s Must-do Winter Activities for the Whole Family

While Toronto winters can be anything but inviting, that doesn’t stop locals and visitors alike from exploring all this vibrant city has to offer. From holiday markets and light shows to hockey games and art galleries, Toronto’s diversity and splendor make for an exciting winter destination. Whether you’re here for a visit or a lifetime, here are a few fun ways to spend the winter in Toronto.

Get Into the Holiday Spirit at the Toronto Christmas Market

A long-standing tradition in Toronto, the Christmas Market is home to a variety of vendors, family activities, rides, and a massive Christmas tree. The perfect way to get in the holiday spirit, the Christmas Market opens mid-November and runs through December 23rd. Located within the popular Distillery Historic District, there are plenty of shops and restaurants, as well as an iconic Ferris wheel and carousel.

Be Mesmerized by the Toronto Light Fest

Also in the Distillery Historic District is the Toronto Light Fest, which features beautiful art and light installations from both Canadian and international light artists, seamlessly integrated throughout the district. The exhibits will run from mid-January through March 3rd and are designed to “lift the spirits” in the cold winter months.

Enjoy a Hockey Game With the Family

Who doesn’t love a good hockey game in the winter? Treat your holiday guests to a Maple Leafs’ game at the Scotiabank Arena or take in the game on the big screen at the outdoor Maple Leaf Square where the action is broadcast for all to see. The team has games throughout the season.

Brighten Your Winter Palate at Winterlicious

For two very delicious weeks at the end of January, Winterlicious Toronto brings a series of mouth-watering culinary events to the city at over 220 restaurants. Participants can indulge in cuisine from all over the world.

Skate Nathan Phillips Square

Perhaps one of the most treasured holiday traditions in Toronto, skating at Nathan Phillips Square is one of those quintessential Toronto activities that should be on everyone’s holiday bucket list. The rink opens at the end of November and runs through mid-March, weather permitting. Come prepared—individual skate rentals are not available.

Stay Inside (and Warm) at the Art Gallery of Ontario

Not a fan of the cold? Spend the afternoon walking the halls of the Art Gallery of Ontario where you’ll find more than 90,000 works of art. The building itself is quite striking, having been designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. Inside, you’ll find everything from Contemporary works of art to European masterworks, a large Canadian collection, and even an interactive children’s exhibit.
